Dale Abbey
|
Details:
Within the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire is a small, tranquil village called Dale Abbey that contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century by Augustinian monks.
All that remains to this day is a 40ft high chancel window standing alone in a grassy field. Excavations have revealed that the church included transepts 100ft in length, a crossing tower, a cloister 85ft square and a nave of unknown length. Remains of the building can be found in houses around the village.
E Bowman & Sons Ltd required scaffold to provide a working platform to all points of the monument to allow stone repairs. It was necessary to have the scaffold structure free-standing to protect the stonework which was already in a fragile state. |

Great Central Way Bridge
|
Details:
The Great Central Way (or Railway) runs through central Leicester and used to be an important point on the route between Marylebone and Manchester opening in 1899 and finally closing on 3rd May 1969.
It is now used as the Great Central Way footpath and cycleway.
In January 2009 Great Central Bridge underwent repairs with Scaffold Services Ltd being tasked with providing an access solution to the underside to allow necessary shotblasting and painting - helping preserve the bridge. The working platform was to be suspended either side of the bridge and fixed to steel beams and had to comply with the 100 year flood water-level restrictions. There were also greater demands placed on the job in that the structure had to be completely enclosed and sealed prior to work commencing. |

Southwell Minster
|
Details:
Said by many to be the best kept secret among the forty two English cathedrals, the Cathedral of Nottinghamshire is a gem. The Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is popularly known, as it has been for centuries, as “Southwell Minster.” Although Christian worship has taken place on this site for over 1000 years the present Romanesque building celebrates its commencement 900 years ago in 2008. For this anniversary, we were tasked with providing the scaffolding in preparation for major repairs to its central tower.
The scaffolding encompassed the 110ft central tower, to enable a temporary roof system being placed over it, allowing work in all conditions. The tower repairs, carried out by E Bowman & Sons Ltd of Stamford, included masonary, glazing, replacing a flagpole and a new lead roof to the square tower which dates from the 12th Century. Additional general maintenance took place whilst the scaffolding was in place including renewing rainwater chutes, providing a new lightning conductor and updating pigeon deterrents.
In 2008, Southwell Minster celebrated its 900th anniversary of the start of construction of the Nave. The aim was to achieve all the tower works and repairs in time for this birthday year. |

Linford's
Leicester Cathedral
Whilst “only” 150 years old, the spire of the Cathedral not only looked very murky but some de-laminating of the stones was taking place with potentially fatal consequences. It was only once the scaffold was erected that the full extent of stone replacement could be assessed via traditional tapping methods. Many stones had been cut ‘the wrong way round’ which was the reason for the thin layers that had come away. |
